An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A single trader, which became a member in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet these probabilities had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A bill introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
