Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.
She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the edge of space.
