New research reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs explains the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
