The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
