Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.

Police report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.

The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.

Police then located numerous other marked cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Police say initial examinations indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; officials are presently not aware of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they stated.

City officials announced they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.

An important official said the vandalism rendered him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.

"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, referring to the death of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
